Cosplaying 101: Glues

There are many types of glue all with various uses. Below I have listed the glues I have heard of for cosplay and my recommendations on how to use them.

Glues that I have used for cosplay:

  • Mod Podge

  • Cosplay uses: gluing fabric to craft foam, sealing fraying edges, sealing foam surfaces that do not need to bend, providing a clear top coat to surfaces

  • Tips: Use a cheap or old brush to apply it.

  • Cons: Do not allow anything that has mod podge on it's surface to touch other objects that have mod podge on the surface, because they may stick and peal up your paint. If you use it as a clear top coat, it will dull the shine of metallic spray paint. Also glue bubbles are likely, and will be the bane of your existance

  • Wood glue

  • Cosplay uses: Sealing foam surfaces that do not need to bend

  • Tips: I use 5 coats of wood glue on my objects with each coat having less and less water

  • Cons: If you use it on objects

  • Super glue

  • Cosplay uses: gluing objects that need a small amount of glue, gluing small details onto a non porous surface

  • Tips: It will stick to your fingers so use it carefully, it will not stick to polypropylene which is a material used to make toys

  • Hot Glue

  • Cosplay uses: glue details onto costumes (depending on the surface, it may come off though), gluing fabric to fabric especially on objects that are difficult to sew, create lines or rivets on foam objects, fill in gaps between objects

  • Tips: Hot glue is a quick fix, but not necessarily a permanent fix. It will not stick to very smooth or slick surfaces such as some pleather, plastics, glass and rhinestones. Be sure to clean up the stingy string hot glue often leaves behind.

  • E6000

  • Cosplay uses: Gluing rhinestones onto clothing, gluing coverings onto shoes, gluing smooth surfaces together.

  • Tips: E6000 is pretty flexible, if hot glue won't hold it, try E6000.

  • Contact Cement

  • Cosplay uses: The best option when it comes to EVA foam and craft foam, you can also use it to glue craft foam onto fabric.

  • Tips: It leaves a texture when it is dry so only put the glue where it needs to be, can be removed with heat gun, so glue after you heat form your objects (unless you want the edges to be lifted)

Glues that I have not used, but have heard are good for cosplay

  • Epoxy

  • I have seen people use it to glue things like plastics and metals. I have seen it used when hot glue and/or super glue will not work. It involves 2 substances that you mix when you are ready to use. I believe it does not set as fast as super glue or hot glue would. If you know more about how to use epoxy please let me know on my Facebook page.

Glues that I would not recommend using for cosplay:

  • Glue Stick

  • Good for gluing paper to paper when they are both flat surfaces

  • White Glue

  • Good for gluing paper to paper, not good for cosplay

Well there you have it, all that I know about glues for cosplay. What is your favorite glue? Leave you comment here or on my Facebook page.
